News

My best news for the year is that I have been awarded a May Gibbs Children’s Literature Trust Fellowship for the month of September. For this period, I’ll be living in Adelaide and working with students from Seymour College. I’m looking forward to this very much!

During the past eighteen months, I have been working on an adult book with a working title of ‘Swimmers in an Ancient Sea’… referring to the 100 million year old Eromanga Sea that once covered interior Australia. ‘Swimmers’ is a book about love, loss, abandonment and the fracturing of the self, but ultimately about love, integrity and forgiveness. It is set in outback NSW and the Kimberly, so last year, I spent several months travelling in the Kimberly researching… it’s such a hard life being a writer!

The May Gibbs Fellowship also provides weeks of writing time, so although ‘Swimmers’ is not yet finished, I plan to begin a new Young Adult book whilst in Adelaide. Part of the book will incorporate sections of my husband’s diary, which he kept when a young man at Mawson in the 1950’s.
